Welcome to the Matrix
6th Grade Roadtrip Project
Dear Travel Agent:
My wife, two children, and I would like to take a road trip across America. We want to go a total of 2000 miles roundtrip from origination (assigned starter state) and back, and we will travel only by way of the family vehicle. The trip will last 10 days, and we want to visit the following:
1 College or University
2 Large Cities
2 Museums
3 National or State Parks
3 Dinner Restaurants (Not fast food!)
3 Fun Attractions (Theme Park, Concert, Outdoor activity, Sporting event, etc.)
We have a total budget of $5,000.00 for the entire trip. Please plan this trip for us, and I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Mr. Johnny McWannatravel
DIRECTIONS
1. Pick the vehicle that the McWannatravel Family will be driving:
Recreational Vehicle (RV):
- MPG : 10
- Unlimited camping ability: RV Parks and Campsites
Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV):
- MPG: 20
- Has room for only 1 night’s worth of camping supplies – no RV Parks
4 – Door Car:
- MPG: 30
- No room for camping supplies
Hybrid:
- MPG: 50
- No room for camping supplies
- Small, uncomfortable. Limited to 400 miles a day.
(Or you can pick a different vehicle, BUT you will not be able to camp and you have to research the MPG on Google.)
2. Pick a name for your Travel Agency.
3. Create a business card on Publisher for your Travel Agency. Include the name of your Travel Agency, your title in the business (ex: Travel Agent), address, phone number, email address, and a picture of your vehicle.
4. PLANNING THE ROUTE
Plan the route the McWannatravel Family will be taking. You will begin in the assigned state I have given you, but you may pick the starting city in that state. You may travel anywhere in the USA, but remember that you only have 2000 miles total for this trip, and you have to end up back in the city that you start in! A good place to start is www.googlemaps.com and click on “Maps” and “Get Directions.”
1 College/University
2 Large cities
2 Museums
3 National Parks or States Parks
3 Dinner Restaurants
3 Fun attractions
Be sure to save notes and information you find in a Word Document titled “[Your Last Name] Roadtrip Project”. You will use this file throughout the project.
5. TEN-DAY SCHEDULE
Open Microsoft Excel and create a spreadsheet showing where they will be each day #1-10. They do not have to travel every day. Use Google Maps to help you choose where the family will stop. After you have planned your route, choose what special things or places you will have the McWannatravel family do and see in each of the locations. Use Google (type in the name of your city) to help you find things to do. You may also access Travelocity, Expedia, or any other travel website. See Example “A”.
6. BUDGET
Open Microsoft Excel and create a spreadsheet showing the budget for each day. You must include all three meals, cost of activities (if there is one), gas, and cost of a hotel or campsite. You must select specific restaurants for dinner on at least 3 days (Not fast food!). See Example “B”.
7. Create an online presentation on Prezi.com that includes:
- Name of your Travel Agency
- Business Card
- Vehicle of Choice
- Map of Route
- One picture of each place you will visit in chronological order (like a virtual tour):
1 College/University
2 Large cities
2 Museums
3 National Parks or States Parks
3 Dinner Restaurants
3 Fun attractions
